2025 Heat Relief Network Launches May 1 to Protect Residents During Extreme Heat

PHOENIX (April 30, 2025) — As higher temperatures begin to return to the Valley, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) are launching the 2025 Heat Relief Network (HRN) on May 1, a regional initiative aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses and deaths. The HRN will provide free, cooled spaces and other resources to the public through September 30, offering critical support throughout the hottest months of the year.

This community-wide effort brings together government, nonprofit, faith-based organizations, and businesses to protect people most at risk from extreme heat and reduce heat-related deaths.

The HRN includes an interactive map with more than 200 locations countywide where people can find indoor cooling and respite centers, hydration stations or donation sites. The network map will go live on May 1 at azmag.gov/heatrelief [ https://azmag.gov/Programs/Heat-Relief-Network ].

“The Heat Relief Map is a vital tool that connects people to life-saving resources in real time. By leveraging technology and regional partnerships, we’re making it easier for residents to find the help they need to stay safe,” said Amy St. Peter, MAG Community Initiatives Director.

In 2025, MCDPH will continue supporting prevention and response efforts aimed at addressing gaps and barriers to heat relief resources. This includes intergovernmental agreements with Phoenix, Glendale, Chandler, Mesa and Tempe and contracts with community-based organizations to expand hours and days of operation of heat relief sites.

211 Arizona live operators will take calls, in English and Spanish, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily to help residents find nearby cooling centers, transportation help, utility support, or emergency A/C repair.

“Heat deaths are preventable,” said Dr. Nick Staab, Chief Medical Officer for MCDPH. “Last year’s decline in heat-related deaths [ https://www.maricopa.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=3222 ] shows that coordinated, community-based efforts work. But the danger of extreme heat remains very real, particularly for people without stable housing, older adults, and people who use substances.”

Anyone can experience heat illness [ https://www.maricopa.gov/2458/Prevent-Heat-related-Illness#illness ] or death, regardless of age, health, fitness level, or how long they’ve lived in Arizona. Here are some tips to stay heat safe:

* Stay hydrated; drink water before you feel thirsty.
* If you’re sweating heavily or active for long periods, consider drinks with electrolytes to help replace salts and minerals.
* Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
* Use air conditioning whenever possible. Fans alone are not effective when temperatures exceed 95°F.
* Check on older adults and people living alone often. If something increases their risk, like losing power or air-conditioning, you can help them get to a safer, cooler place.
* Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked car.
