How Homes Really Burn in a Wildfire

In desert communities like Mesa, homes are often lost to wildfires because of wind-blown embers, not direct flames. Embers can travel more than a mile ahead of a wildfire and ignite dry plants, wood features or yard debris next to a home.

Common ignition risks include dry vegetation, unscreened vents, wood fences and trash bins placed too close to walls. The good news is that these risks are preventable with a few simple changes.

Mesa Fire and Medical encourages residents to reduce ignition risk and learn how Firewise USA® principles can help protect their property.

Steps may include:


* Removing dry brush, palm fronds, and dead plants near structures
* Replacing wood mulch or fencing with non-combustible options
* Installing ember-resistant vent screens

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month (DIAM) in Arizona

Drowning Impact Awareness Month

Mesa is partnering with the *Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona [ https://www.preventdrownings.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] *to raise awareness and take action to prevent drownings—especially among children. August, with its back-to-school hustle and extra distractions, is one of the highest-risk months for child drownings

At the heart of drowning prevention is understanding the *“ABCs” of water safety*: 


* *A* = Adult supervision 

* *B* = Barriers

* Also vital are life jackets and knowing the signs of drowning. 

Every child drowning is preventable, and awareness saves lives. Multiple safeguards work together to prevent tragedy: 

*Supervision* - Always watch children around water, even when you’re not swimming. According to Meghan Chute, Fire and Life Safety Education Specialist, “"75% of child drownings happen during non-swimming times.” "This means times when families think kids are inside, but they’ve made their way to the pool unnoticed.

*Barriers and Alarms - *Install a four-sided isolation fence around your pool with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Add door alarms and child locks to alert you when a door is opened. Don’t forget about doggy doors; small children can slip through them easily.

*Swim Lessons - *Teach kids to swim early, but remember, no child is drown-proof. Swimming lessons are one piece of the puzzle; however, supervision and barriers are still necessary.

*Life Jackets - *Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets for kids, especially when learning to swim or near open water.

*Never Swim Alone - *Swimming alone is never safe at any age. Always swim with a buddy or under supervision.
