City Breaks Ground on New Fire Station to Address Emergency Needs of the Rapidly Growing Southeast Mesa Region

Construction on Fire Station 224 in southeast Mesa officially started Sept. 3 with a groundbreaking ceremony. The new fire station, which will be located at 3441 S. 80th St. north of Elliot Road, will address the projected increase in emergency calls and reduce fire and medical response times as southeast Mesa continues to grow.

"This fire station is more than a construction project; it is a promise to our community. In 2022, Mesa voters placed their trust in us by approving the Public Safety Bond, and today we are turning that trust into reality with the groundbreaking for Fire Station 224," said Mayor Mark Freeman. "I want to thank the people of Mesa for their commitment to public safety. Without their support, this station would not be possible." *Read More > [ https://mesanow.org/news/public/article/3540?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]*

September is National Preparedness Month

Sept energy safety

Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, so staying ready is crucial. Being prepared helps protect your family, home and future from floods, wildfires, severe storms and power outages.

* Create a family emergency plan
* Build or update your emergency kit
* Review your homeowner's insurance
* Know the emergency phone numbers

Utility Emergency Information

*Electric Emergency:* If you encounter a downed power line, stay away from it and do not touch anything in contact with it. If a power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside and call 911 to report it. Then, contact your electric service provider:

* City of Mesa Electric: 480-644-2262
* SRP: 602-236-8811

*Natural Gas Emergency:* Use your senses to detect a gas leak. *Only Rain in the Storm Drain*

Storm Drain

Celebrate *Pollution Prevention Week, Sept. 15 - 21,* by keeping our storm drains free of dog waste, motor oil and other chemicals. When you dump these contaminants on the ground, they can wash into the storm sewer system and end up in our lakes, retention basins, community parks and rivers.

Unlike the sanitary sewer, which treats wastewater from sinks, toilets and other sources, storm drains carry runoff straight to our waterways with no treatment and can ultimately contaminate our groundwater.

Learn more about *Mesa’s stormwater program [ https://www.mesaaz.gov/Environment-Sustainability/Environmental/Stormwater?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* and how you can help keep pollutants out of our waterways. *Plant it Forward: September is for Monarchs*

Monarch butterfly

If you love Monarchs (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), now’s the perfect time to roll out the welcome mat in your yard. Monarchs are making their way through Arizona on their 3,000-mile migration, and the Phoenix area is an important stopover from September through May.

The secret to attracting them? Native plants – especially milkweed and nectar plants. These plants provide the habitat and food Monarchs need to thrive.

Want to learn more? Join us for our upcoming *Planting for Butterflies [ https://events.mesalibrary.org/event/planting-butterflies-151428?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* workshop on October 18, where you’ll discover how to create a pollinator-friendly landscape and support Monarchs in your own backyard. One East Pop Up

One East Pop-Up at Mesa Arts Center

This month, One East Pop-Up at Mesa Arts Center features Arizona artist Casey Farina. Known for his innovative digital art installations, Farina brings two engaging projects to life in the pop-up space: an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience and a captivating projection mapping installation.

Originally commissioned for Mesa Arts Center’s 20th anniversary, Farina’s augmented reality project is reimagined for the VR Meta Quest 3 headset. Visitors can step inside the history of Mesa Arts Center as it unfolds around them in a seated, interactive format. The “MAC 20th Anniversary VR Experience” is available on Thursday, Sept.  18 and 25, from 10 - 11 a.m.

Farina’s projection mapping installation “Possibility Space,” transforms the west windows of the One East Pop-Up space into a digital canvas running nightly from sunset to 11:30 p.m. The work features swarms of entities that traverse and interact in three vertical window columns, creating ever-changing visuals for viewers.

*All One East Pop-Up activations are free and open to the public*. Stay tuned for more One East Pop-Up programs throughout the year.
