Heat Relief Network Wraps Up 2025 Season

*"Partnerships Across Maricopa County Strengthen Extreme Heat Response"*






PHOENIX (September 29, 2025)—As the Maricopa County Heat Relief Network concludes its official season tomorrow, September 30, preliminary data suggest a second year of fewer heat-related deaths.

As of the week ending September 20, there have been 156 confirmed heat-related deaths in 2025, compared to 265 during the same period in 2024. Deaths under investigation have also dropped, with 370 currently under review, down from 652 at this time last year. These early figures come alongside a range of county-supported initiatives aimed at preventing heat-related illness and death.

“There are multiple factors behind the data, but we know the hard work and coordinated efforts of our HRN partners have contributed to saving lives,” said Dr. Nick Staab, Chief Medical Officer for Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH). “With extreme heat remaining a constant threat in our region, we must stay focused and continue strengthening our efforts to protect the community. Even one heat death is one too many.”

Key highlights from 2025 Maricopa County initiatives (data from May 1–September 23, 2025):


* 24 heat relief sites supported, including a 24/7 respite center in downtown Phoenix and an overnight respite site at Chandler Senior Center
* Initiatives addressing the intersection of substance use and extreme heat, including naloxone distribution, referral pathways from heat relief sites to treatment providers, and expanded community education
* 7,958 Lyft rides to and from heat relief sites
* 21,152 cases of water distributed
* 309 cases of electrolytes distributed
* 98 Medical Reserve Corps volunteers contributing 452 hours since May 1

This is the second consecutive year of funding approved by the Board of Supervisors to expand heat relief services, including more sites, extended hours, and transportation assistance. This work is primarily supported by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, which are secured through the 2026 heat season before expiring.

“While this season is ending, our commitment to protecting residents from extreme heat continues year-round,” said Dr. Staab. “We are grateful to all our partners who make this community-wide effort possible. Every volunteer hour, every cooling center, and every ride to relief makes a difference.”

MCDPH will continue updating its heat dashboard [ https://www.maricopa.gov/1858/Heat-Surveillance#dashboard ] weekly on Tuesdays through November 4th with preliminary surveillance data. A final report with total heat-related deaths and additional data details will be released in spring 2026, once all pending investigations are completed by the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
