East Valley Veterans Parade

East Valley Veterans Parade: Ready Then, Ready Now - 250 Years of Military Service

*November 11*
*11 a.m. - 1 p.m.*
*Downtown Mesa*

In 2025, our nation marks a historic milestone—250 years since the creation of the Army (June 14, 1775), Navy (October 13, 1775), and Marine Corps (November 10, 1775). From the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord in 1775 to the ongoing missions around the globe today, the spirit of the American military has remained constant: ready to serve, sacrifice, and protect the freedoms we hold dear.

This year’s East Valley Veterans Day Parade theme honors that enduring legacy. It is a tribute to the readiness and resilience of America’s Armed Forces from before our nation’s birth through every generation that has followed.

New Limited-Bag Entry Policy for Council Meetings

*Starting November 3, 2025*

To keep entry safe and efficient during meetings with City Council at City Hall, the City Manager has directed a limited-bag policy:

*Allowed*

* Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags up to 12″ × 6″ × 12″
* Small bags/clutches approximately the size of a folded 8.5″×11″ sheet (max 8.5″ × 5.5″)

*Not Allowed*

* Backpacks, large purses/totes, laptop or camera bags and other non-clear bags exceeding 8.5″ × 5.5″

*Notes & Exceptions*

* Mesa does not use X-ray machines; limiting bag size and allowing clear bags reduces manual searches and keeps lines moving.
* Medically necessary items, infant/diaper supplies and assistive devices are permitted and may be visually inspected.
* *No on-site bag storage. Please plan ahead.*
* Policy currently applies to all meetings of the City Council at City Hall beginning Nov. 3, 2025; the City Manager may adjust scope based on attendance and safety needs.
* Standard meeting decorum rules remain in effect.

Did You Know Mesa Doesn’t Have a Primary Property Tax?

"Here's how we fund City services"

Mesa stands apart as the largest city in the United States without a primary property tax. But how do we fund essential services like Police, Fire and Medical, libraries, parks and arts and culture programs?

Watch this video to learn about Mesa's innovative utility transfer system—a model that allows profits from city-owned utilities to directly fund the services our community depends on every day. It's a unique approach that has helped Mesa maintain quality services while keeping property tax burdens low for residents.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month

Look Twice, Save a Life Challenge

Look Twice, Save a Life

The Transportation Department launched the MesaMoves Look Twice, Save a Life Challenge, a community-driven initiative promoting safer driving, biking and walking behaviors. Between 2017 and 2022, 1,359 people were seriously injured or killed on Mesa roadways — an average of four people each week. The challenge encourages residents to stay alert and look out for one another on the road.

The Look Twice Challenge emphasizes the importance of being aware on the road and looking twice before making any movements on the roadway. To encourage our community to adopt safer roadway habits, the Look Twice Challenge offers Mesa residents the opportunity to win prizes, including bicycles, museum memberships, gift cards and safety gear.

Participants can sign up and earn points by:

* Taking an online safety pledge.
* Joining a social media challenge using #looktwicemesa or #mesamoves.
* Participating in a holiday-themed scavenger hunt in December.
* Signing up for the road safety newsletter.

Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in the Home

Battery display

Take these three steps to use lithium-ion batteries responsibly: *buy, charge, *and* recycle* safely.

*Step 1:* *Buy* only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.

*Step 2:* *Charge* devices safely. Always use the cords that come with the product to charge and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.

*Step 3*: *Recycle* batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location.

Mesa residents have access to the *Household* *Hazardous Materials Facility* [ https://www.mesaaz.gov/Utilities/Trash-Recycling/Resident-Programs/Household-Hazardous-Materials?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] where they will accept electronics that have lithium-ion batteries. Or visit *call2recycle.org [ https://www.call2recycle.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* to find additional recycling locations near you.

Help us help you make the holidays a little safer by putting into action the *buy*, *charge* and *recycle* steps for safety with lithium-ion batteries.

*Parent or Pay: E-Bike Rules Mesa Families Should Know*

vandalism

E-bikes are fun, fast and everywhere—but parents, it’s up to you to ensure your kids ride safely and legally in Mesa.

Here’s what you need to know:

Riders must be *16 years or older*

*Helmets and protective gear* are strongly encouraged

E-bikes should only be used where *bicycles are allowed*

Please talk to your kids about respecting parks and public spaces. Riding on playgrounds, sports courts or damaging turf and dirt areas is considered criminal damage and can lead to fines and even jail time.

If you see someone breaking the rules and damaging our parks, please call the Mesa Police non-emergency line at 480-644-2211*. *And if you see damage that’s already been done*, *report it to *CityLink [ https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:*2F*2Fmesaaz.citysourced.com*2F*3Futm_medium=email*26utm_source=govdelivery/2/01000199a75eb213-f407320e-bc92-4ee4-adb4-3d6b3fbc2fac-000000/AN7Qvm1t6uBn1BAnX8QDZV2Iv5n1acbXuu0-oF1s_Dw=425__;JSUlJSU!!BjMq5T9wZ50!bE_zLfvmOcweROOdQh3sCbpQOp1ykmrBzFMhVIVmRTsKxR6tNxRTEOEJIb3VFnpayvB4IF4qUYMfdtxvt1TNHAbSs4aXShha%24?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].*

Break Up with Your Winter Lawn

Winter lawn

Are you in a committed relationship with your grass? If so, it might be time to cut ties, at least when it comes to a lush, green lawn in the winter.

Overseeding your summer Bermuda uses an excessive amount of water – more than 8,000 gallons for every 1,000 square feet of grass – to germinate the seed and water it through the winter. There is also the added cost of the seed, labor, water and mowing. Give yourself a break this winter and skip overseeding.

Do you still need more convincing? Here are our *Top 10 Reasons* [ https://www.mesaaz.gov/Environment-Sustainability/Water-Conservation/Skip-Overseeding?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

Fall Safety Reminder - Carbon Monoxide Awareness

Gasflame3

As the cooler weather sets in, make sure your natural gas appliances are working safely to protect you and your loved ones from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is a colorless, odorless and toxic gas produced when fuel-burning appliances aren’t operating or vented properly.

If you have natural gas appliances in your home, ensure they are working efficiently and safely. Your natural gas flame should be blue with a hint of yellow near the tip. A yellow flame may mean trouble. Always follow manufacturers’ instructions for installing, maintaining and using gas appliances. Consider installing CO detectors for added protection.

CO poisoning symptoms can resemble the flu, but without fever. Watch for headaches, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and blurred vision.

If you suspect the presence of CO:

* Get fresh air immediately.
* Seek medical attention if symptoms are present.
* Call 911 and our emergency line at 480-644-4277.
