Mesa Fire and Medical Encourages Communities to Explore the Firewise USA® Program
Firewise
Mesa Fire and Medical Department is actively supporting neighborhoods in reducing wildfire risk through participation in the *Firewise USA® program*. This nationally recognized initiative helps residents work together to create safer, more fire-resilient environments.
Several Mesa communities, including Las Sendas, Mountain Bridge and Madrid, are already involved in the program. Firewise USA provides a framework for assessing wildfire risk, planning mitigation strategies and taking meaningful action.
Benefits of participating may include:
* Improved community preparedness
* Guidance on defensible space and fire-safe landscaping
* Access to potential grant opportunities
* Possible insurance incentives for residents
Mesa Fire and Medical encourages residents to speak with their HOA boards about learning more. Those not involved in an HOA can still help by:
* Sharing Firewise resources with neighbors or board members
* Inviting a Firewise representative to speak at a community meeting
* Contacting the department directly to explore next steps
*See more details [ https://www.mesaaz.gov/Public-Safety/Mesa-Fire-Medical/Fire-Prevention/Fire-Code/Wildfire?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* on Mesa’s wildfire prevention efforts and how your neighborhood can get involved.

June is Home Safety Month
leakid
This month, ensure your family knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak. Since natural gas is colorless and odorless, a rotten egg smell is added to help you detect it. You can also identify a gas leak by:
* Hearing a blowing or hissing sound coming from a pipeline, meter or appliance
* Seeing unusual changes in soil, dead or dying plants, blowing dirt or bubbling water
If you suspect a gas leak or emergency:
* Leave the area right away and go to a safe location.
* Call 911 and our emergency gas hotline at 480-644-4277 to report it.

*Put Your Lawn on a Water Diet*
Lawn watering
If you're watering every day, you're watering too much. For a healthier lawn, put it on a water diet.
It is best to apply .75 inch (3/4”) of water each time you irrigate to wet the root zone to a depth of about 8 inches. With this amount of water, your grass will only need watering *once every 3 days*, even in the hottest part of summer. Water deeply and infrequently, in the early morning (2 to 9 a.m.) or late evening (after 6 p.m.), to minimize evaporation and encourage roots to go deeper into the soil, where they are better protected from hot, dry winds.
How do you know if you're applying the right amount of water? See pages 7 and 8 of our *watering guide [ http://wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/landscape-watering-guide/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* to determine your run time for your specific system. Once you dial in the run time, you’ll just need to adjust the frequency with the seasons. These watering recommendations are based on science from the University of Arizona.
